Getting your driver’s license has always been a big deal, but Florida has now implemented a new law which is now making it a bit harder for teens. Starting July 1, 2025, it’s a requirement for anyone ages 15-17 to take a much longer, state approved driver education course before taking a learner’s permit test.
Before this change, teens had to take a four-hour Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) course that was the required driver education for teens. Now, the new law replaces that requirement for teens under the age of 18 unless they completed the old course before Aug. 1, 2025.
The updated law is that teens must complete the Driver Education Traffic Safety (DETS) course, which is a six-hour program. This course is approved by the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles. According to the Florida Safety Council, “This course covers essential driving skills including defensive driving techniques, traffic laws, hazard awareness, and the dangers of distracted and drowsy driving.”
In addition to the education course, teens must still pass the vision and hearing screening and the permit exam. They must hold their learner’s permit for at least one year before qualifying for a full driver’s license.
“I love it! I think it’s important that every new driver has extensive knowledge when behind the wheel,” freshman Delia Gee said.
