Pompano High is a very involved school when it comes to our extracurriculars. Pompano offers over 50 clubs, and new ones are created every year. This creates a welcoming environment, making new and current students feel like there is always a place for them to express themselves. Pompano also has a variety of sports, from cheerleading to golf. With all these extracurriculars comes a reoccurring issue: sponsors. Every school club needs an adult sponsor, and with new clubs being introduced every year, students often find themselves struggling to find an available sponsor.
The most challenging times for clubs are at the beginning of the year. New clubs must find sponsors and officers for the club, while returning clubs need to make sure the previous sponsor is still going to do the club and they have returning officers or new students upholding each position. Although we began the year with a lack of sponsors, most of them have been picked up. “Being a sponsor does take extra time and work, but ultimately, we are here for the kids,” Ferris said.
A lack of sponsors not only limits resources and activities for students but holds back student productions, specifically theater. With their previous sponsor retiring, and teachers not being able to take the position, Banaska happily accepted. “I’ve seen what they can do, and it would be such a shame if this school lost the theater program.” Due to this delay in transitioning between sponsors, the Theater department will be showcasing a Prequel of Peter Pan on Jan. 26.
It’s important to thank your sponsors for dedicating their time to partake in something that’s important to students or opening their interests to students, creating a welcoming environment for everyone.
