As of this month, Sinners has won four Oscars awards and one major award at the Saturn Awards. The movie, released in 2025, has broken the all-time Oscar record by receiving the most nominations.
Sinners has an incredible movie plot that features how cultures connect. The movie also explores the meaning of spiritual practices. It suggests that we should be aware of who we let in our spaces, not only physically but also spiritually.
Sinners takes place during 1932 Mississippi during the Jim Crow era, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. Smoke and Stack, the twins, return to Mississippi, their hometown, to run a juke joint. As they proceed through the night, they face racial terror and a supernatural vampiric entity that forces them and a few others to defend their juke joint throughout the night.
During a pivotal scene in Sinners, Sammie Moore-one of the main characters and also the twins’ cousin- plays his blues guitar at the juke joint. As he plays, ancient and futuristics music eras appear around him. According to Sammie’s Music In Sinners Explained & Why Remmick Wants It So Bad, “As he plays and everyone becomes overwhelmed by the music, unseen visions of other musicians from across history appear, ranging from Zaouli dancers, crip walkers, electric guitarists, a ballerina, and Peking opera performers all moving in tandem to the music and adding to it.” From Zaouli dancers, Peking opera performers, and electric guitars, DJ’s, and more begin to dance around him.
The guitar could also be a resemblance of connecting with the past and future. Remmick, the main antagonist, gets drawn towards his music and has a desire to claim Sammie’s ability to reconnect with the past and present music eras. According to The Role of Vampires in the Film ‘Sinners’ | Psychology Today, “She [Annie] also explains that the soul becomes trapped in the vampire’s body, making a person unable to move on to the afterlife.” Remick has this desire because vampire entities, such as himself, are incapable of joining his ancestors since their souls are trapped in the human bodies.
