Earlier this semester, our school’s Med Society club just held their first meeting of the year, allowing students interested in healthcare to learn about the organization. The Med Society currently has over 100 students following its page on Instagram. The club plans to have speakers, volunteer opportunities for those interested in medical fields, and more. A few weeks ago, they had their interest meeting, where they discussed many things, including shadowing day at a local hospital, a first-aid workshop, and a career panel with doctors and nurses.
Club President Dakota Jackson discussed why she created the club. “I wanted to give women with similar goals a sense of community and belonging, while also helping them gain access to knowledge about healthcare that isn’t commonly taught. I wanted a space where we could all learn, grow, and support each other,” she said.
The club meets eight times this school year in room 318 from 3:45pm-4:30pm, and it is open to all students regardless of prior medical knowledge. Officers encourage interested students to follow the club’s Instagram or Remind and attend the next meeting to learn more.
“Last winter, I realized that many students interested in pre-med didn’t know how to start getting involved in healthcare-related activities that show universities their passion for medicine. To change that, I decided to start the Med Society as a place for students to find those opportunities and take their first steps into the medical field. Founding the club naturally led to me becoming president,” Jackson said. She talked about her journey becoming president and why.
Overall, Med Society is a place to learn about healthcare and how to find new opportunities in the medical field. Through dedication, teamwork, and a passion for helping others, members are not only learning about healthcare but also building the leadership and compassion needed to work in the medical field.
