Pompano Beach High School introduces a new club: the Jewish Student Union, which promotes education and inclusivity among students.
The club, founded by Isabella Tobon, aims to create a welcoming space for both Jewish and non-Jewish students to learn about Judaism and Jewish traditions.
“The main purpose of the Jewish Student Union is to educate Jewish and non-Jewish students about Judaism,” Tobon said. “I was inspired to create the Jewish Student Union as I saw we had other cultural clubs and believed our Jewish students deserved a club where they feel welcomed and non-Jewish students could become educated about Judaism to combat the rising antisemitism in our world.”
The Jewish Student Union meets once a month, with each meeting focused on a hands-on activity connected to Jewish culture or holidays. During its first meeting, members made candy sukkahs to learn about the holiday of Sukkot.
The president of the club talked about the premise of the club and its purpose. “The premise of the club is to teach Jewish traditions and culture, so you do not need to be Jewish or have any knowledge about Judaism to come,” Tobon said. The club is supposed to teach all about the Jewish culture and traditions for everyone.
Teachers and administrators have praised the club for promoting understanding and respect. With more students joining each month, the Jewish Student Union is helping to build a stronger, more inclusive community for everyone interested about the Jewish community at Pompano Beach High School.
