Pompano Beach High School offers a diverse range of clubs and activities, but nothing compares to a new one just taking the stage. The Zoology club was created by junior Enzo Alves this year. The club spreads awareness for animals and helps in teaching students to appreciate them and their effect on Earth.

This is certainly not Alves’s first time working in a zoology landscape, which stems from his obsession with animals and the zoo. Alves’s two older sisters are active in science, who have been great supporters of him. Ever since he was a kid, Alves has always been going to zoos. “I’ve always been obsessed with the weirdest animals,” he said. This explains Alves’s dedication towards zoology. 

Alves was inspired to create the club when he visited a zoo and met one of the zookeepers that worked there. “This zookeeper actually told me her story about living around so much wildlife in Australia and meeting the Irwin family,” he said. This special moment Alves experienced would change his mindset towards zoology. 

The Zoology club aims to take care of its members and help animals. This is just one of the club’s many duties though. “A few responsibilities of ours include cleanups in beaches, parks, and animal shelters and welfare centers,” Alves said. 

So far, these duties have not been met because of the time the club has been around for, which is of this year. This is not a worry though because Alves plans to put the club into action. “Our club is actually just now about to do its first cleanup,” Alves said. The club will also try to keep the momentum going despite some road bumps. “I plan to continue it throughout Thanksgiving break for whoever’s available and winter break too.”

Alves hopes to one day create a community of people who will take their time to appreciate these beautiful and friendly creatures. He also wants his club to help provide a service to them. Alves and his group are changing the world for the better. Right now, the Zoology club has a bright future ahead of them and hopes to grow.
