New book details Avatar Kyoshi’s journey

“Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rise of Kyoshi” written by F.C. Yee and Avatar co-creator Michael Dante DiMartino is a must-read for “Avatar: The Last Airbender” fans. This book focuses on the life of Avatar Kyoshi and how she became so respected–both in life and death.

While fans may be wary of a poorly handled sequel, they need not worry. This book was carefully written by both Yee and DiMartino to create an enjoyable story that keeps readers invested without breaking any of the details already set in the TV series.

“Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rise of Kyoshi” is full of action and suspense, but is tastefully paired with a more thoughtful and introspective side. There are plenty of intense moments in the book with close fights, but there are also plenty of moments when Kyoshi reflects on her past, present and future.

This book also masters character development. Providing the reader with the point of view of both the protagonist and antagonist helps the reader understand both sides of the story. The authors also are sure to provide plenty of depth to other important characters. Flashbacks, a shifting point of view and dialogue are all compiled into a clear story that never bores the reader.

While I recommend the book, I feel that there should be at least some acknowledgement of the one weak point: the occasionally scattered layout. One moment you feel something is clear and important to the story, but it may later be contradicted in the next chapter. That being said, this does not happen often, and the book primarily keeps a concise idea in mind.

It’s also important to address that we already know some details about Kyoshi from the TV series “Avatar: The Last Airbender” even though the show gives us only a few glimpses of her. Kyoshi is powerful, becoming well respected even after death. She is also extremely tall, has a signature look, and is not opposed to killing when deemed necessary. It’s clear that Kyoshi dies, but the viewers have no idea at what age.

The book’s authors take this into account and introduce these parts of her with careful development and attention to detail. Each small detail added in the book may become a vital part of the story and character’s identity.

If you want a book that has a blend of action and plot, I’d recommend “Avatar: The Last Airbender – The Rise of Kyoshi.”It builds upon a more mysterious character from an appreciated TV series and shows her story with an official creator of the show and talented writer. If you decide to read it, you’ll find that a fantastical world with admirable characters awaits you.
