The calming power of pets
By Ethan Del Campo, Staff Intern
During the COVID-19 pandemic, there has been one positive direct result. Animal shelters nationwide have been clearing out. People are either adopting or fostering pets to keep them company during an unprecedented time in American history. I hope that in the foster situations many of the animals will become valuable members of the family and ultimately be adopted.
The emotions people are experiencing with their new family members is something I have experienced my entire life. Ever since I was born, we have always had animals to keep us company. We have had dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters and the occasional bird. We have always had an open-door policy to animals in need. I have always found it relaxing to sit down and watch television and have my dog put his head on my lap for a little affection, or to have my cat sit next to me wanting a little scratch under her chin.
Enjoying your pets’ company can have benefits on your health. Studies have shown pets can lower stress hormones and help bring down people’s blood pressure. COVID-19 has certainly increased everyone’s stress level. Perhaps if you don’t have a pet you would consider adopting or fostering one and see that mutually you can benefit each other.
