How I’ve kept from banging my head against the wall out of boredom during quarantine

By Madison Zimmer, Staff Intern

My head, inches away from the plaster, I came up with the brightest idea: Maybe this isn’t the most efficient way to spend my time.

Sure, this might be an urge we all have but can’t put a name to. And sure, if I do it enough, I can say that I actually forgot to do my homework this time due to brain damage.

So if you’re weighing out the pros and cons as I am, I’m sorry to say, you’ve come to the right place. Here’s what I did instead.

Now, believe it or not, I do have hobbies that don’t involve staring at my cell phone for hours (though I still prefer not to check how long I spend on Instagram a day to avoid disappointing in myself).

I’ve been drawing and painting on regular basis.

Last week I bought way too many plants despite my lack of a green thumb. Yes, I have killed many, including a cactus, which in my defense, takes talent. I murdered the easiest plant to keep alive.

I’d also like to add this is a very entertaining and time-consuming hobby to sit and watch them grow or, in my case, die.

I also I stay on FaceTime for all hours of the day while staring at homework on my screen hoping it will complete itself. That usually brings me back around to the wall idea.

But then, my dad swings my door open and tells me to get it together and that we are going to go through family photos. We went through lots of baby photos, photos of past Christmases, and my parents’ wedding, which included a photo of my grandmother looking very irritated at my grandfather. They’re divorced now.

Oh, I almost forgot I dyed my hair red — again. My dad took a photo of the process without warning, so I have a bone to pick with him.

Anyhow, I doubt that was helpful at all, but if I could leave you with one piece of advice to keep your sanity through this quarantine, it would be don’t under any circumstances, water a cactus more than once a day. At least, I think.
